Larry R. Hicks, 70, of Lima passed away 1:45 p.m., Monday, July 10, 2017 at St. Rita's Medical Center. He was born July 2, 1947 in Lackey, KY to Cecil and Anna Slone Hicks. His mother, Anna Staup survives in Lima. He married Phyllis Jean Fishpaw June 13, 1970 and she survives in Lima.
Mr. Hicks was a very active member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Cridersville. He used his talent for woodworking to build the shelter house and indoor worship alter there. He was a member of Mended Hearts and had served as their president for 5 years and also volunteered at St. Rita's. He was a member of Little Hog Creek Dulcimers Group and had made several dulcimers. He retired from Shawnee High School after 43 years of teaching and had coached middle school girls basketball and high school track. He was very active in helping others and had been a math tutor. He loved spending time with his grandkids, riding motor cycles and dirt bikes.
Additional survivors include children: Lori (Daniel) Mercer of Lewis Center, Ohio, Phillip (Erin) Hicks of Lima and Randall (Melanie) Hicks of Dublin, Ohio; 9 grandchildren: Jackson Schiefelbein, Maya Mercer, Luke Mercer, Macie Mercer, GraciAnn Hicks, Garrett Hicks, Geoffrey Treece, Sophia Hicks and Emma Hicks; a brother Gregory (Noreen) Hicks of Burnside, KY and sisters Carol (Craig) Montgomery, Patricia (Rob) Rettig, Prina (Dan) Maitlen all of Lima, Paula (Martin) Reams of Waynesfield.
The family will receive friends Friday, July 14, 20 17 at Bayliff & Son Funeral Home, Cridersville from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.
The funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 15, 2017 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Cridersville with Pastor Sharon Stonerock officiating. Burial will follow in St. Matthew Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to Mended Hearts Chapter 111, P.O. Box 885 Lima, Ohio 45802; American Cancer Society or St. Matthew Lutheran Church.
